Welcome to Healthwatch Wigan

  • Introducing Healthwatch

photo of a group of peopleHealthwatch Wigan helps children; young people and adults speak up about local health and care services. Our goal is to make sure people's views and experiences are listened to, understood and acted upon.

We are governed by a Board of Directors made up of local people who live in the Borough and who are committed to seeing improvements to local health and social care services.

Healthwatch will listen to you to find out what you think about the health and care services you access. Tell us what works well, what can be improved and what services are missing.

  • Healthwatch England

Healthwatch England is the national consumer champion in health and care. They have significant statutory powers to ensure the voice of the consumer is strengthened and heard by those who commission, deliver and regulate health and care services.

Healthwatch Wigan works with Healthwatch England to share local people's experiences of health and care to establish a national picture of what works and what doesn't.

front cover of directoryHealthwatch Wigan have worked with Healthcare Publications to produce a signposting directory for Wigan and Leigh. This is the first issue of the directory, which contains information on a range of health and care topics, as well as listing primary health care and social care providers across the Borough. It includes details about Healthwatch Wigan, NHS Health Checks, the new Care Act, healthy living, patient choice and rights, personal budgets, choosing care and expressing concerns. It lists GPs, dentists, pharmacies, opticians, care in your own home, residential care homes and voluntary sector advice and support organisations.

The directories have been distributed to a range of health and care providers, as well as other locations throughout the Borough. You should be able to pick one up from your local doctors surgery or pharmacy. Alternatively, you can read the directory online or download a copy.

  • A 'new era' for Greater Manchester's health and wellbeing

A ‘new era for Greater Manchester’ begins on 1 April 2016, as the region becomes the first in the country to take control of its combined health and social care budgets – a sum of more than £6 billion.

It means that – for the first time – leaders and clinicians will be able to tailor budgets and priorities to directly meet the needs of local communities and improve the health and wellbeing of the 2.8million residents.

It presents health officials with a unique opportunity to tackle some of the poor health inequalities that currently blight the region and the past year has seen politicians, councillors and senior health officials work in partnership to establish a system of governance that will allow Greater Manchester to prosper.
